PCOS and bleeding after a period

When ovulation is irregular or absent, the uterine lining may not follow a predictable cycle. This can lead to spotting, bleeding between periods, or a heavier bleed after a longer gap. Other possibilities include pregnancy-related bleeding, contraception effects, fibroids, polyps, thyroid problems or infection.

The timing and pattern matter. Note whether the blood appears immediately after a period, follows sex, comes with pelvic pain or discharge, or occurs after periods have stopped. PCOS is a possible context, not a diagnosis for every episode.

Book a review if bleeding repeats, lasts longer than expected, follows a missed period, or is affecting daily life. Bring a record of dates, flow, clots, pain, medicines, contraception and pregnancy possibility. A clinician may consider a pregnancy test, blood tests or an examination based on your history.

Do not start hormones or supplements to stop the bleeding without advice. If you have PCOS, ask how to protect the uterine lining while also addressing your cycle, contraception or fertility plans.

Get urgent help for severe pain, fainting, marked weakness, fever, or bleeding that is rapidly soaking through protection. Bleeding with a possible pregnancy, especially alongside one-sided pain or dizziness, also needs urgent assessment.
