What should you know about one milia?

Milia form when keratin, a protein in the outer skin, becomes trapped in a tiny cyst. They often look white or cream, feel firm, and are not inflamed like many spots. A single bump can occur on otherwise healthy skin or after irritation, a rash, or a minor injury. Similar-looking skin bumps and whiteheads have different causes, so a clinician can check an uncertain lesion.

Wash gently, use non-comedogenic skin products, and leave the bump alone. Picking, needles, and home extraction can cause bleeding, infection, or a lasting mark. If the bump bothers you cosmetically or does not settle, a dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and remove it with a suitable in-clinic technique. Topical retinoids may be considered in selected situations, but they are not appropriate for every person or area.

Arrange a medical review if the bump becomes painful, red, rapidly larger, crusted, bleeds, or changes in colour. Seek assessment sooner when several new lesions appear or when the diagnosis is unclear. A firm white bump is not automatically milia, particularly if it behaves differently from the surrounding skin.

Ask whether the bump is milia or another lesion, whether observation is reasonable, which removal method suits its location, and how to protect the skin afterward. Mention any eczema, recent procedure, or product reaction near the area.
