What should you know about non allergic rhinitis and asthma?

Non-allergic rhinitis mainly affects the nose, causing blockage, watery discharge, sneezing or mucus at the back of the throat. Asthma affects the breathing tubes in the chest and may cause wheeze, chest tightness, cough or breathlessness. Irritation in the nose can make breathing feel harder and post-nasal mucus can provoke cough, but nasal congestion alone does not establish asthma. Smoke, fragrances, cold air and changing weather can aggravate either set of symptoms. Allergic rhinitis may also coexist, so a clinician may ask about itchiness, watery eyes and clear triggers.

Write down whether symptoms are in the nose, chest or both, and record triggers, night waking, exercise symptoms and relief from prescribed medicines. Reduce smoke and strong scents, keep prescribed asthma treatment available, and use it exactly as directed.
