What should you know about milia what causes?

The skin normally sheds keratin, a structural protein, toward the surface. When that material becomes enclosed in a small pocket, a firm pale cyst can appear. Primary milia can arise without another skin problem and are common around the eyes and cheeks. Secondary milia may follow a burn, rash, blister, abrasion or procedure that changes the skin surface. Occlusive creams or makeup may contribute for some people, but a single bump rarely has one identifiable trigger. Milia are not a sign of poor hygiene and are not the same process as acne whiteheads.

Keep the routine simple: cleanse gently, remove makeup thoroughly, and choose products labelled non-comedogenic when possible. Avoid thick ointments on areas that repeatedly develop bumps unless prescribed for another condition. Do not try to release the contents with a needle. If milia remain, a clinician can confirm the diagnosis and discuss sterile extraction or another suitable procedure. A topical retinoid may be considered in some cases, but it can irritate delicate skin and is not appropriate for everyone.

Seek an assessment when bumps appear after significant skin injury, multiply quickly, become tender or inflamed, or do not match your previous pattern.
