Milia on the Lips: What to Know

A milium is a tiny pocket of keratin under the skin. On the outer lip or its border, it may appear as a pale, smooth, seed-like bump. Milia are usually firm rather than tender and do not release material when pressed. Whiteheads and other skin bumps can look similar, while lesions on the moist inner lip may represent something different.

The location matters because lip skin is sensitive and moves constantly. Friction, picking, harsh exfoliation, or heavy products may make the area look red even when the original bump is harmless.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, keep hands away from the bump, and pause any product that stings. Avoid home extraction, scrubs, lemon juice, and undiluted essential oils near the mouth. These approaches can irritate or damage the lip.

A dermatologist can inspect the bump with magnification and remove confirmed milia using a suitable in-office method. A topical retinoid may be considered for selected cases, but it can irritate lip skin and should only be used as directed.

Book an assessment if the lesion is painful, crusted, ulcerated, bleeding, rapidly enlarging, or associated with persistent swelling. Medical review is also sensible when multiple bumps appear after a new product or when you are unsure whether the spot is on the outer lip or inside the mouth.

Ask what the bump most closely resembles, whether it needs removal, how to protect the lip during healing, and which active ingredients are safe to use near the lip border.
