Milia and milium: what the terms mean

These cysts contain keratin beneath the outer layer of skin. A single milium may look like a tiny white or pearly seed, whereas a group is called milia. They commonly occur on the face and around the eyes and are often not inflamed. The words describe the same skin finding rather than two separate diseases. A clinician can check unusual, changing, or irritated bumps because not every white spot is a milium.

Gentle cleansing and a simple moisturiser can reduce irritation, but rubbing and aggressive scrubs will not safely empty a cyst. Avoid picking or trying to pierce it. For persistent lesions, a dermatologist may discuss a topical retinoid or a procedure such as curettage and cautery. The chosen approach depends on the number, depth, location, skin sensitivity, and proximity to the eye.

Arrange a review if a lesion becomes tender, red, crusted, or bleeds, or if its shape or colour changes. Seek assessment for a bump that affects the eyelid or vision. Diagnosis is also worthwhile when a spot has an irregular appearance or has not responded to gentle care, since another condition may need different treatment.
