What should you know about what milia look like?

A milium is often smooth, rounded, and well defined. Several may appear together, giving the skin a small cluster of pale dots. They can occur on the cheeks, nose, forehead, or eyelids and may be especially noticeable when the skin is stretched. Unlike a typical pimple, a milium usually has no surrounding swelling and does not produce pus. Other conditions can resemble this appearance, so photographs and self-diagnosis are not always enough.

Keep the area clean with a mild cleanser and avoid rough exfoliation or picking. Do not try to open a spot with a needle, pin, or fingernail. If the bumps are persistent or bothersome, a dermatologist can confirm whether they are milia and explain options such as monitoring, a prescribed topical retinoid, or clinician-performed extraction. Use extra caution around the eyelids.

Book an assessment if the spot is painful, itchy, rapidly changing, bleeding, ulcerated, or associated with eye redness or altered vision. A review is also sensible when a bump does not match the usual smooth, pale appearance or when many new lesions appear after a skin injury or treatment.
