What should you know about milia large?

Milia are usually small, firm, pale cysts under the skin. A bump that seems larger may be a deeper cyst, several close cysts, or another condition that resembles a whitehead. The surface colour alone cannot identify it. Its growth pattern, depth, tenderness, redness, and exact location give a clinician more useful information.

Avoid trying to force out a large bump. Pressure can rupture material into surrounding skin, cause inflammation, and leave a mark. A larger lesion may also need a different removal method from a tiny superficial milium.

Take a clear photo for comparison, stop picking, and book a skin assessment if the bump persists or changes. A dermatologist may recommend observation, a prescribed topical retinoid for suitable surrounding skin, or a precise office procedure such as curettage and cautery. Treatment should match the diagnosis and depth.

Seek prompt review if the lesion grows quickly, becomes hot or very painful, drains pus, bleeds, ulcerates, or causes swelling near the eye. A firm bump that remains unchanged for a long time still merits assessment if its appearance is atypical or it interferes with daily life.

Ask whether the bump is a single deep milium or another lesion, whether treatment could scar, and what aftercare will protect the surrounding skin.
