What should you know about milia inside mouth?

Milia are small cysts containing trapped keratin and are most often seen on the face, especially around the eyes. The moist lining of the mouth can develop other harmless or irritated bumps that look white, including a blocked minor salivary gland, a small injury, or a surface change from friction. Location, texture, tenderness, and how long it has been present help a clinician sort these possibilities.

Do not scrape, pop, or pierce the area. That can cause bleeding, infection, or a wound that is harder to assess. A photo and a note of any recent biting, dental work, or new mouth product can help at an appointment.

Rinse gently with water, avoid irritating foods if the area is sore, and keep normal oral hygiene without brushing directly over a painful spot. Arrange a dental or medical assessment if the bump persists, enlarges, or keeps returning. Skin treatments such as topical retinoids are not suitable for the inside of the mouth unless a qualified clinician specifically directs their use.

Seek prompt care for a mouth lesion with trouble breathing or swallowing, marked swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, persistent bleeding, or severe pain. A non-healing sore, a firm area, or a change that continues should also be assessed, even if it is not painful.

Ask: Does this look like a keratin cyst or a mouth-specific lesion? Could recent biting, dental work, or a blocked gland explain it? Is observation appropriate, and what changes should prompt review?
