Milia dots: what to know

A milium can look like a tiny white, cream, or skin-coloured dot with a smooth surface. It may feel harder than a typical pimple and often has little surrounding redness. Eyelids, cheeks, and forehead are common sites. Whiteheads and other skin bumps can look similar, so a changing or inflamed spot deserves assessment.

Wash gently and avoid digging, facial scrubs, home needles, or squeezing. These can break the skin and leave irritation or a colour change. If dots persist or bother you, a dermatologist can discuss a topical retinoid or controlled removal such as curettage and cautery. Do not use prescription products near the eyes unless advised for that area.

Arrange a review if dots multiply quickly, form an unusual cluster, or do not match the usual smooth and firm pattern. Seek prompt care for bleeding, a sore that does not heal, marked swelling, pus, severe pain, or eye symptoms. Examination can prevent treating a different lesion as milia.
