Milia Around Lips: What to Know

Milia are firm, smooth, white or skin-coloured bumps formed when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface. Around the lips, they may be confused with whiteheads, blocked pores, cold sores, or irritation from saliva, cosmetics, or dental products. Milia themselves are generally not tender and do not contain pus. Location alone cannot confirm the diagnosis, particularly if the bump is on the lip surface rather than the surrounding skin.

Do not squeeze, scratch, or lance a lip-area bump. Pressure can cause a wound, dark marks, or infection and may spread irritation across the surrounding skin. Wash gently, avoid abrasive scrubs, and review new lip balms, heavy creams, or makeup if the area became irritated after using them. If the lesion persists or is cosmetically troublesome, a dermatologist can confirm it and may remove it through a controlled sterile technique. A topical retinoid may be discussed for selected cases, but it is not suitable for every person and should not be applied to the moist inner lip unless specifically prescribed.

Arrange care if the bump is painful, blistered, ulcerated, crusted, bleeding, spreading, or changing quickly. Prompt review is sensible for swelling of the lips or face, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, fever, or redness that is extending. A recurrent sore in the same place may need a different assessment from milia.

Ask whether the bump is on the skin beside the lip or on the lip itself, which products should be paused, whether removal is appropriate, and how to care for the area while it heals.
