Milia in the armpit: what to know

Milia are small, firm, keratin-filled cysts. In the armpit, friction, sweat, shaving, deodorant and hair follicles create several other explanations for a pale or skin-coloured bump. A red, tender lump may suggest follicle inflammation or an abscess rather than milia; a soft or deeper lump has a different set of possibilities.

A clinician can inspect the surface and feel the depth. Do not assume that every white spot is a Whitehead, and do not diagnose a persistent lump from a photograph alone.

Wash gently, dry the fold carefully and choose loose clothing while the area settles. Pause shaving and fragranced deodorant if they sting. Avoid squeezing, needles and harsh exfoliants: the warm, folded skin can become irritated or infected after trauma.
