What should you know about humidity and allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation inside the nose after contact with a trigger. Damp indoor spaces can encourage mould growth, while warm, humid bedding and carpets may support dust mites. The resulting symptoms can include sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, watery discharge and post-nasal drip. Humidity itself is not proof that an allergy is present; notice whether symptoms change in particular rooms, seasons or buildings. Nasal allergy can also occur alongside allergic conjunctivitis or asthma.

Improve ventilation after bathing and cooking, repair leaks, and dry damp materials promptly. Wash bedding regularly and reduce dust traps where practical. A humidity monitor can show whether a room stays damp, but avoid making the air excessively dry if that irritates your nose. Saline rinses may clear allergens. A clinician or pharmacist can discuss allergy treatment, including whether a nasal spray or other medicine fits your symptoms.

Book an assessment when nasal symptoms persist, disturb sleep, affect work or repeatedly return in a damp setting. Seek urgent help for wheezing, severe breathlessness, swelling of the lips or tongue, or trouble speaking in full sentences. Fever, marked facial pain or eye swelling may point to a complication that needs prompt review.
