Heavy period after LEEP: what to know

LEEP removes a small area of cervical tissue. Watery, brown, or lightly blood-stained discharge can occur while the cervix heals, and bleeding may briefly increase as a healing surface separates. Flow that is heavy, continues to build, or returns after settling may indicate a bleeding point or another gynaecological issue rather than routine healing. Cervical dysplasia is the reason many people have LEEP, but heavy menstrual bleeding usually needs its own assessment because the cervix and womb have different possible causes.

Follow the aftercare instructions from your treatment team, including restrictions on inserting anything into the vagina during healing. Record the colour and amount of bleeding, clots, pain, fever, and discharge odour. Contact the clinic that performed the procedure if bleeding becomes heavier than a period, does not settle, or returns after a quiet interval. The clinician may examine the cervix and decide whether further testing is needed. Colposcopy or a colposcope may be part of follow-up, depending on your results.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy or rapidly increasing, you feel faint, have severe pelvic pain, fever, or foul-smelling discharge. Do not wait for the planned follow-up appointment when these symptoms occur.

Ask whether your bleeding fits cervical healing, whether the treatment site needs examination, and when sex, tampons, exercise, and bathing are safe for you. Ask when your follow-up results will be reviewed and whether cone biopsy is relevant to your care.
