Heavy hair fall due to dandruff: what to know

Dandruff commonly causes flakes, itch, and an irritated scalp. Scratching can loosen hairs that are already ready to shed and can snap fragile strands, so hair may look thinner around the affected area. Ordinary dandruff does not explain every pattern of hair loss. Thick scale, marked redness, tenderness, oozing, or broken hairs may suggest scalp inflammation or infection. Diffuse shedding can also occur with Telogen Effluvium, while smooth patches or a widening part may fit Alopecia Areata or Female Pattern Hair Loss.

Use an anti-dandruff shampoo according to its label, work it gently into the scalp, and rinse thoroughly. Avoid picking flakes, vigorous scratching, tight hairstyles, and heavy products that worsen buildup. Give the scalp time to settle and note whether itch and scaling improve together with shedding. If the shampoo irritates your skin, stop and seek advice about another option. A clinician can check the scalp and select treatment if the problem is not ordinary dandruff.

Book a dermatology appointment when hair loss is heavy, continues despite improved scalp symptoms, or produces visible thinning. Seek prompt care for painful swelling, pus, crusting, rapidly spreading scale, broken hairs, or sharply defined bald areas. These signs may require treatment aimed at an infection or inflammatory condition rather than dandruff care alone.

Ask whether the scalp findings fit dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, scalp ringworm, or another condition. Ask whether the hair is shedding from the root or breaking, and which shampoo or medicine is suitable for your scalp and other health needs.
