Heavy Hair Fall After Delivery: What to Know

Many people notice extra hair in the shower, on a pillow, or in a brush after pregnancy. This can happen as hairs that stayed in the growth phase during pregnancy move into a resting and shedding phase after delivery. The change can feel sudden even when the scalp looks normal.

Postpartum shedding commonly affects the whole scalp rather than creating a single smooth bald patch. It is often called telogen effluvium. Recovery can be gradual, so the amount of hair coming out may not stop immediately. New short hairs along the hairline can be a reassuring sign of regrowth.

Other explanations are possible. A widening part or thinning at the crown may fit Female Pattern Hair Loss. Round, sharply defined patches can occur with Alopecia Areata. Scaling, tenderness, broken hairs, or inflammation may point to Scalp Ringworm. Tight braids, extensions, or repeatedly pulled hairstyles can contribute to Traction Alopecia.

Handle the hair gently: use a wide-toothed comb, avoid tight styles and frequent heat, and choose a mild shampoo if the scalp feels sensitive. Eat regular meals with varied sources of protein and iron, and tell a clinician if you had heavy bleeding, restrictive eating, or unusual tiredness after delivery. Do not start high-dose supplements or prescription hair treatments without checking whether they are suitable while breastfeeding.

Take a photo of your part and hairline in similar lighting from time to time. This helps you and your clinician distinguish diffuse shedding from a developing pattern or patch.

Arrange a medical review if shedding is severe, continues without improvement, or leaves visible thinning. Seek care sooner for smooth patches, scalp pain, marked redness, pus, heavy scaling, broken hairs, or eyebrow loss. A clinician may examine the scalp and consider blood tests when symptoms suggest an iron or thyroid problem. Prompt assessment is also sensible if hair loss is accompanied by pronounced fatigue, dizziness, palpitations, or feeling unusually cold.

Ask whether the pattern looks like postpartum shedding or another type of hair loss, whether your delivery or bleeding history changes the evaluation, and which tests are appropriate. Mention all medicines and supplements, whether you are breastfeeding, and any scalp symptoms. Ask when follow-up would be useful and which treatments should wait until breastfeeding has ended.
