Heavy bleeding after stopping Depo

Depo suppresses ovulation and changes the uterine lining. After stopping it, bleeding patterns may be irregular while the body resumes its own cycle. Heavy or unpredictable bleeding can also occur with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, or ovarian cysts, so the timing after stopping contraception does not prove the cause. Pregnancy is possible before periods become predictable.

Record bleeding days, pad changes, clots, pain, dizziness, and any chance of pregnancy. Arrange a clinician visit if the flow is difficult to manage, continues, or keeps returning. A clinician may check for anaemia, pregnancy, and other causes, and discuss treatment options. Depending on your health and contraception needs, a combined pill containing ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel may be considered; do not start or switch hormones without personalised advice.

Seek urgent care for rapidly heavy bleeding, faintness, shortness of breath, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with bleeding. Get prompt help if you feel too weak to stand normally or cannot keep up with fluids.
