Hay fever rash: what it may mean

Pollen can settle on exposed skin and cause irritation, especially after outdoor activity or when sweat and friction are present. Rubbing an itchy nose or eyes may leave sore, dry skin. Hay fever symptoms themselves more often affect the nose and eyes than the skin, so a rash should not automatically be attributed to pollen.

Hives are raised, itchy patches that can move from one area to another. Eczema, contact dermatitis, heat rash, bites and reactions to a new medicine can look different and need different care. The timing, appearance, products used and any swelling help a clinician narrow the cause.

Rinse exposed skin with lukewarm water after being outdoors, pat it dry and use a fragrance-free moisturiser. Wear breathable clothing and avoid scratching, scented products and any newly introduced cream that seems to worsen the rash. A pharmacist can suggest an appropriate anti-itch treatment after checking your age, skin and medicines.

Keep a note of where the rash appears and whether it follows outdoor exposure, food, a product or a tablet. Treating associated allergic rhinitis may reduce rubbing, but do not put nasal or eye medicines on the skin unless the label specifically allows it.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange medical advice for a painful, blistering, infected-looking or persistent rash, or if fever or joint swelling occurs. A rash that begins after a new medicine should be discussed promptly before taking another dose.
