What should you know about hay fever from dust?

Dust is a mixture of particles, so symptoms may come from house-dust mites, mould, animal material or other irritants rather than dust itself. Mite particles are found especially in bedding and soft furnishings. Exposure can inflame the nasal lining and cause sneezing, watery discharge, congestion, itchy eyes or throat irritation. Symptoms that repeat in a bedroom or after dusting suggest an indoor trigger, but this pattern cannot identify the cause on its own. A persistent cough or wheeze may need assessment for asthma or another condition.

Damp-dust instead of dry-dusting, wash bedding as directed by its care label, and reduce fabrics or clutter that collect particles in the sleeping area. Ventilate rooms and address visible damp or mould safely. A filtered vacuum may help, but cleaning can briefly stir dust, so use ventilation and avoid remaining in the room while airborne particles settle. Saline nasal spray can wash away irritants. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on antihistamines or nasal treatment; testing may be considered when the trigger remains unclear or symptoms are difficult to control.

Seek medical advice if symptoms continue, impair sleep, or recur despite reducing exposure. Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange prompt review for persistent facial pain, fever, one-sided nasal blockage, or a cough accompanied by wheeze.
