Hard Milia Under the Eye

Milia form when keratin becomes enclosed just beneath the skin. Under-eye milia commonly appear as smooth, white or cream-coloured dots and are often not tender. Their position can make them look like whiteheads, although they are different structures.

Other bumps can occur around the eyelid, so a changing colour, crust, discharge, swelling, or persistent irritation should not be assumed to be milia. The eye itself should never be scratched or treated with unprescribed products.

Cleanse gently, avoid rubbing, and keep exfoliating acids, scrubs, and extraction tools away from the eyelid margin. Do not puncture or squeeze the bump: a small injury in this area can cause infection, bleeding, or a visible mark.

A dermatologist or qualified clinician can confirm the diagnosis and, if desired, remove a suitable lesion with a controlled technique. Topical retinoids or curettage and cautery may be discussed, but they are not appropriate for every eye-area bump.

Arrange prompt review for eye pain, marked swelling, redness, vision change, light sensitivity, discharge, or a rapidly changing lesion. Seek urgent eye care if vision is affected or the eyeball itself is painful.

Ask whether the bump is definitely milia, how close it is to the eyelid edge, whether observation is reasonable, and which treatment protects the surrounding eye surface.
