What should you know about hamster allergy test?

Hamster allergens may be present in dander, saliva, urine, and particles carried on bedding or clothing. An allergy specialist may use a skin prick test or a blood test, depending on your history, medicines, skin condition, and access to testing. A positive result shows sensitisation; it does not by itself prove that every episode of sneezing, eye irritation, cough, or rash is caused by your hamster. A negative result also needs to be interpreted alongside the timing and pattern of symptoms. Other exposures, including dust mites or another pet, can create a similar picture.

Write down when symptoms begin, whether they occur during handling or cage cleaning, and whether they improve away from the home. Bring a list of medicines and mention asthma, eczema, or previous reactions. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the testing clinician tells you to, because some medicines can affect skin results. Until the cause is clearer, avoid touching your face after handling the hamster, wash your hands, keep bedding away from sleeping areas, and ask someone else to clean the cage when possible. A clinician can discuss safer exposure control and treatment.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, wheezing that is rapidly worsening, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or widespread hives after exposure. These features can signal a severe allergic reaction. For persistent blocked nose, itchy eyes, cough, or skin symptoms, arrange an assessment; recurring symptoms may need review for allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, asthma, or another cause.
