Short answer

Hair loss workup labs can look for treatable contributors such as iron deficiency or thyroid problems, but testing is tailored to your history and scalp examination.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Testing
Blood work is selected from the history and examination.
Diagnosis
A normal panel does not exclude a scalp or inherited hair disorder.

What the results can mean

A clinician may consider a blood count, iron studies, thyroid testing or selected hormone tests when your symptoms suggest them. Diffuse shedding after illness, major stress, childbirth or a change in nutrition may fit Telogen Effluvium, while a receding hairline or widening part may be assessed clinically as Male Pattern Hair Loss or Female Pattern Hair Loss. Round smooth patches, scale, broken hairs or scalp inflammation can point toward Alopecia Areata or Scalp Ringworm; these findings may require a scalp examination or other testing rather than routine blood work. A normal panel does not rule out every cause, because many hair disorders are diagnosed from the pattern and the scalp.

How to prepare and follow up

Bring a list of medicines, supplements, recent illnesses, dietary changes and family history. Mention heavy menstrual bleeding, fatigue, weight change, heat or cold sensitivity, acne, excess facial hair, or a new hairstyle that pulls on the roots. Do not start high-dose biotin or iron simply to change a result; supplements can interfere with some tests or be unsuitable for you. Ask whether any supplement should be paused before testing. Keep the report and discuss each abnormal result in context, since replacing a deficiency may help its related shedding but may not address a separate inherited or inflammatory hair condition.

When to seek care promptly

Arrange a clinical assessment if hair loss is sudden, rapidly expanding, painful, associated with pus or marked redness, or accompanied by eyebrow loss or smooth shiny skin. Seek prompt medical advice for hair loss with severe fatigue, fainting, unexplained weight change, or other symptoms of significant illness. A clinician can decide whether blood tests, a fungal test, dermoscopy or another evaluation is appropriate.

Questions for your doctor

Which possible causes fit my hair-loss pattern? Which labs are relevant to my symptoms? Do medicines or supplements affect the results? When should we review the report, and what finding would change the treatment plan?

Questions people ask

Does everyone with hair loss need blood tests?

No. Testing is more useful when the history or examination suggests a nutritional, thyroid, hormonal or systemic contributor.

Can lab tests identify the exact cause?

They may reveal a contributor, but the hair-loss pattern and scalp examination often remain central to diagnosis.
