Hair loss while nursing

Short answer
Hair shedding while nursing can follow postpartum body changes, but persistent, patchy, or inflamed loss needs an individual assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why shedding may happen
After pregnancy, changes in the hair-growth cycle can make more hairs enter the shedding phase together. Nursing may also coincide with disrupted sleep, reduced food intake, illness, or thyroid and iron-related concerns. Patchy loss can instead reflect alopecia areata; scale or broken hairs can suggest scalp ringworm, and pulling styles can cause traction alopecia. Hair loss is not automatically caused by breastfeeding.
Caring for yourself and your baby
Eat regular varied meals, handle wet hair gently, and avoid tight styles or harsh chemical treatments on a sensitive scalp. Tell the clinician that you are nursing before using a medicine, supplement, or compounded product. Do not start finasteride treatment without a specific discussion of breastfeeding and safer alternatives; a clinician can tailor advice to your health and feeding plans.
When to arrange care
Arrange medical review for bald patches, scalp pain, redness, crusting, pus, heavy scale, or loss of brows or lashes. Seek care for ongoing shedding with marked fatigue, dizziness, temperature sensitivity, or other new symptoms, since a broader health issue may need attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which causes fit your timing and pattern, whether any tests are useful, which ingredients are compatible with nursing, and how to balance treatment with feeding goals.
