A hair pull test is a brief clinical check of active shedding, but its result cannot identify the cause of hair loss on its own.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test examines

A clinician gently holds a small group of hairs near the scalp and applies light traction to see how readily hairs release. The finding is interpreted alongside the distribution of thinning, the appearance of the scalp and the hair-cycle history. Washing, brushing, recent styling and the timing of a trigger can affect what is noticed.

More active shedding may occur with Telogen Effluvium, but a pull test does not by itself distinguish that condition from other causes. Patchy loss may suggest Alopecia Areata, while patterned thinning may fit Male Pattern Hair Loss.

Preparing for an assessment

Do not repeatedly test your own hair, as handling can increase worry and may break fragile hairs. Note when shedding began, whether it followed illness, stress or a medicine change, and whether you see itch, scale, pain or smooth patches. Bring a list of medicines and hair products. The clinician may examine the scalp and decide whether additional evaluation is useful.

When to arrange care

Arrange review for sudden shedding, rapidly widening areas, smooth bald patches, scalp inflammation, broken hairs or loss affecting eyebrows or eyelashes. Prompt assessment is also sensible when shedding persists or follows a new medicine. A negative or reassuring pull test does not rule out patterned thinning or a scalp condition.
