Hair Fall Due to Dandruff: What to Know

Dandruff causes visible flakes, itch, and scalp irritation. Scratching can loosen hairs that are ready to shed and can break fragile strands near the skin. Dandruff itself does not explain every type of hair loss, and inflamed scalp skin can sometimes resemble other conditions.

Look for clues such as scaling across the scalp, redness, tenderness, broken hairs, or smooth bald patches. Scalp ringworm may cause scaling with broken hairs, while alopecia areata often creates distinct smooth patches. Hair loss can also occur independently as telogen effluvium, pattern hair loss, or traction alopecia.

Use an anti-dandruff shampoo according to its label, working it onto the scalp rather than only the hair lengths. Give the product the contact time stated on the packaging, rinse well, and avoid picking flakes. A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser on other wash days may reduce irritation.

Handle wet hair carefully, loosen tight hairstyles, and keep notes about itch, flaking, and shedding. If symptoms continue despite regular scalp care, a clinician can examine the skin and decide whether a different treatment or testing is needed.

Arrange an appointment for rapidly increasing loss, a defined bald patch, broken hairs, pus, marked redness, pain, swelling, or thick crusting. Seek prompt advice if scalp symptoms affect a child or if more than one person in the household develops a scaly scalp, because an infection may need prescription treatment.
