GERD and vocal cords: why reflux may affect your voice

The vocal cords need a smooth, protected surface to vibrate. Reflux reaching the upper throat can irritate nearby tissues, especially after meals or overnight. Some people have voice symptoms without obvious heartburn. Hoarseness can also result from infection, voice overuse, allergies, smoking or another throat problem, so reflux should not be assumed from a voice change alone.

Keep meals moderate, avoid lying down soon after eating, and identify foods or drinks that reliably worsen symptoms. Sip water, avoid repeated forceful throat clearing, and rest your voice when it feels strained. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antacid or acid-reducing treatment is suitable. Persistent hoarseness may need examination by a clinician or ear, nose and throat specialist.

Book an assessment for hoarseness that persists, keeps returning, or affects speaking or swallowing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing throat swelling, inability to swallow liquids, or chest tightness with breathlessness, sweating or faintness. Cough with blood, vomiting blood or black stools also needs prompt medical attention.
