Genital milia removal: what to know

How the structures involved in Milia differ from normal

Short answer

Genital milia are small keratin-filled cysts; safe removal usually involves clinical assessment and a sterile procedure rather than squeezing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What genital milia look like

Milia are firm, pearly white or skin-coloured bumps beneath the surface. They are usually not painful and are different from pus-filled spots, ulcers, or infections. In the genital area, friction and sensitive skin make visual diagnosis particularly useful because whiteheads and other skin bumps can look alike. A clinician can distinguish milia from conditions that need different treatment.

Removal options

Do not pierce, pick, or squeeze a genital bump at home; this can cause an open wound, inflammation, or infection. After assessment, a clinician may release the cyst through a tiny sterile opening. Curettage and cautery may be considered for selected lesions. Topical retinoids are sometimes used for suitable milia, but genital skin can react strongly, so use only a prescribed product and clear instructions. Gentle washing and avoiding friction can reduce irritation while you wait.

When to seek care

Book an assessment if a bump persists, multiplies, or is difficult to identify. Seek prompt care for pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bleeding, ulceration, or a rapidly changing lesion. Fever or spreading redness after an attempted removal warrants urgent medical advice. These findings may point away from uncomplicated milia and need a different evaluation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what makes the bump consistent with milia, whether removal is necessary, which method suits its location, and how to protect the skin afterward. Ask what reaction to a topical retinoid should prompt you to stop and call.
