What should you know about a full body allergy test?

There is no single test that reliably checks every substance or explains every rash, stomach symptom, blocked nose, or breathing problem. A clinician chooses allergens based on your symptoms, timing, home and work exposures, medicines, and eating pattern.

A skin prick test places small amounts of selected allergens on the skin, commonly the forearm or back, then gently pricks the surface. A local raised, itchy area can show sensitisation. An allergy blood test measures specific antibodies in a blood sample. Neither result alone proves that an exposure causes your symptoms; the result must fit your history.

Testing may consider pollen, house dust mites, animal dander, mould, foods, medicines, or insect venom. Patch testing is a different method used mainly for delayed skin reactions to contact substances. Broad panels can produce confusing findings, so testing everything is not automatically more useful.

Bring a list of symptoms, suspected triggers, medicines, supplements, and previous reactions. Note what happened, how soon it started after exposure, how long it lasted, and whether the same pattern happened again. Ask before stopping any medicine: antihistamines can affect some skin-test results, while other medicines may need special planning.

Wear clothing that allows easy access to the testing area and expect mild local itching after skin testing. Do not deliberately eat, touch, or inhale a suspected trigger to make a reaction happen. Results are interpreted with your clinician, who may recommend avoidance, treatment, or a supervised challenge when the diagnosis remains uncertain.

Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, confusion, or rapidly spreading hives with vomiting or breathing symptoms after an exposure. These can be signs of anaphylaxis and should not wait for an allergy appointment or test result.

Contact a clinician promptly for a reaction that keeps worsening, widespread blistering or skin peeling, or repeated symptoms that interfere with eating, sleep, exercise, or breathing. A test is for assessment; it is not a substitute for urgent treatment during a severe reaction.
