Fraxel scar removal: what to know

A fractional laser creates narrow treatment zones rather than removing the whole surface at once. The surrounding untreated skin helps support recovery, while the treated zones stimulate new collagen and gradual remodelling. This can improve texture and blending, especially for some indented acne scars or changes left after injury. Raised, very firm, actively growing, or unusually pigmented scars may need a different plan or specialist assessment.

A clinician should examine the scar, ask about previous procedures and medicines, and check for active infection or irritation. Tell them if you form thick scars, have a history of cold sores, or develop dark marks after inflammation. After treatment, use the recommended gentle cleanser and moisturiser, avoid picking or scrubbing, and protect the area from sunlight. Redness, warmth, swelling, or a sandpaper-like texture can occur while the skin settles; the planned number and spacing of sessions vary.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is worsening rather than easing, swelling spreads, blisters or pus appear, or the area becomes increasingly hot and tender. Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling affecting breathing or vision, or for signs of a severe allergic reaction. New or changing pigment should also be reviewed, particularly after sun exposure.
