What are crow's feet?
Crow's feet are lines at the outer eye corners caused by repeated facial movement and gradual skin ageing.
Also called lateral canthal lines, they often become visible when smiling or squinting before remaining noticeable while the face is relaxed. They are a normal cosmetic change rather than an illness, although some people choose treatment because the lines affect how rested or smooth the eye area appears.
How crow's feet appear
Crow's feet commonly present as fine lines and very commonly present as wrinkles that fan from the outer corner of each eye. Early lines may show mainly with expression; established creases can remain at rest. The pattern may be uneven between sides because facial movement and sun exposure are not always symmetrical.
Pain, crusting, marked swelling or a new vision change is not explained by crow's feet and deserves separate assessment.
Why the lines form
The circular muscle surrounding the eye folds the overlying skin whenever you smile, laugh or narrow your eyes. With time, collagen, elastin and natural skin hydration decline, so the folded skin rebounds less completely. Ultraviolet exposure accelerates this structural change, while dryness can make shallow lines look more obvious.
How they change over time
Expression lines usually appear first during movement. They may gradually deepen, extend farther from the eye and become visible at rest as skin support decreases. Their pace varies with inherited skin features, environmental exposure and habits. Treatment can soften their appearance, but ongoing facial movement and ageing continue.
Factors that make crow's feet more noticeable
Frequent unprotected sun exposure, smoking and repeated squinting can make lateral eye lines more pronounced. Fair or easily sun-damaged skin may show texture changes earlier, while genetics influence skin thickness and elasticity. Dryness does not create deep wrinkles by itself, but it can accentuate surface creasing.
Assessment
A clinician usually identifies crow's feet by examining the skin while the face is relaxed and during smiling or squinting. They may assess skin texture, eyelid position, facial symmetry and previous procedures. Before cosmetic treatment, disclose eye problems, medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies and any history of difficulty closing the eyelids.
Ways to soften crow's feet
Daily sun protection, moisturiser and appropriately selected topical skincare may improve surface texture but cannot stop normal expression. Botulinum toxin injections reduce the muscle contraction that creates dynamic lines. Fractional laser treatment targets skin remodelling and may suit texture change or resting lines. Choice depends on the dominant line type, eye anatomy, skin tone, downtime preferences and medical history.
Procedures near the eyes require a trained, appropriately licensed practitioner. Discuss temporary bruising, swelling, irritation, asymmetry and treatment-specific eye-area risks before proceeding.
Everyday care
Use sunglasses in bright conditions to reduce glare-related squinting, and apply sunscreen without rubbing the delicate eyelid margin. A bland moisturiser can temporarily plump dry surface lines. If using active skincare, introduce it cautiously and keep products out of the eyes; burning or persistent redness is a reason to stop.
Possible concerns
Crow's feet do not usually cause physical complications. Problems are more likely to arise from unsuitable products or procedures, including dermatitis, pigment change, infection, eyelid asymmetry or impaired eyelid closure. Seek prompt care for eye pain, sudden visual disturbance, severe swelling or inability to close an eye after treatment.
Reducing further skin damage
Normal facial movement and ageing cannot be prevented. Consistent ultraviolet protection, avoiding smoking, managing dry skin gently and correcting unaddressed vision problems can limit avoidable contributors. Avoid pulling the skin while removing makeup, and choose eye-area products that do not repeatedly sting or inflame the skin.
Choosing professional care
A dermatologist or qualified aesthetic clinician can distinguish movement-related lines from texture change and discuss realistic improvement. Ask who will perform the procedure, what product or device is planned, how eye anatomy affects the approach, and what aftercare is available if swelling, asymmetry or irritation develops.
Questions people ask
Are crow's feet a medical problem?
They are usually a normal age- and movement-related skin change. Arrange assessment if the area is painful, swollen, crusted or associated with a vision change, because those features suggest another issue.
Can skincare remove crow's feet?
Moisturiser and selected topical products may improve dryness and fine surface texture, while sunscreen limits additional ultraviolet damage. Established movement-related creases often need a procedural approach for a more noticeable change.
Which procedure is suitable for eye-corner lines?
Botulinum toxin may suit lines driven mainly by expression, while fractional laser treatment may address texture and resting lines. A clinician should assess eyelid function, skin tone and treatment goals before recommending either.
