Fractional Laser: How the Technology Works

A fractional laser treats microscopic columns of skin while leaving surrounding skin available to support healing.

The device can be configured for different depths and intensities. Some systems are designed mainly for surface renewal, while others deliver energy deeper into the skin. “Fractional” describes the pattern of treatment, not one single device or one fixed result.

Fractional laser may be considered for texture changes, selected acne scars, fine lines, and some uneven pigmentation. The clinician cleanses the skin, protects the eyes, and passes the handpiece over the planned area. Cooling or topical numbing may be used depending on the device and treatment depth.

Afterward, the skin may feel hot, tight, or sunburn-like. Flaking or small crusts can occur with deeper treatment. Follow-up care usually focuses on gentle cleansing, moisturising, and careful protection from sunlight while the surface recovers.

Fractional laser cannot erase every scar, line, or colour change, and improvement is gradual as treated skin remodels. A result may be uneven if different areas respond differently. Active infection, uncontrolled inflammation, or a tendency to form raised scars can change whether treatment is suitable.

The word fractional does not guarantee a short recovery or a particular outcome. A clinician should distinguish acne scars from ongoing acne, pigmentation disorders, or another skin condition before choosing settings.

Options can include skincare prescribed for pigment or acne, chemical peels, microneedling, non-ablative energy treatments, or scar-focused procedures. The choice depends on scar type, skin sensitivity, downtime, and whether the underlying acne is controlled.

Ask which laser type and depth are planned, how the skin should be prepared, and what recovery signs are expected. Avoid picking flakes or crusts. Tell the clinician about cold-sore history, medicines that increase light sensitivity, recent tanning, and any previous darkening after skin injury.

Redness, swelling, sensitivity, temporary darkening or lightening, and infection are possible concerns. Use only the aftercare advised for your treatment and limit sun exposure while healing. Seek prompt clinical advice for increasing pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, or delayed healing.
