What should you know about forward head posture assessment?

Short answer
A forward head posture assessment examines head and neck alignment, movement, muscle control, and symptoms to guide practical treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the assessment looks for
A clinician may observe you sitting, standing, walking, and turning your head. They may check neck and upper-back movement, shoulder position, muscle tenderness, strength, sensation, and how long you can hold a comfortable position. The assessment is not simply a photograph of your posture: symptoms, work habits, screen use, sleep position, and previous injury help determine whether the alignment is relevant. Forward head posture can accompany neck pain or upper-back pain, but posture alone does not identify the cause.
What you can do
Bring examples of activities that trigger symptoms, such as reading on a phone or working at a laptop. Keep the screen near eye level, support your forearms, change position often, and use gentle exercises prescribed for your strength and mobility. Physiotherapy may combine movement retraining, strengthening, and advice about daily tasks. Postural correction therapy or a workplace ergonomic assessment may be considered when habits or workstation setup contribute.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment for persistent pain, headaches linked with neck movement, or reduced range of motion. Seek urgent care after significant trauma or for new arm weakness, spreading numbness, difficulty walking, loss of coordination, fever with severe neck stiffness, or trouble speaking or breathing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what findings matter in your case, whether imaging is needed, which exercises are safe, and how to adjust your desk or phone use. Ask how progress will be measured beyond simply looking straighter.
