What neck pain feels like
Neck pain can arise from muscles, joints, discs, nerves, or injury, so its pattern and accompanying symptoms guide assessment.
Neck pain may feel like an ache, tightness, stiffness, burning, or a sharper pain with turning or looking up. It can stay around the neck or travel towards the shoulder, upper back, or arm. Some people notice headache, reduced movement, muscle spasm, tingling, or numbness; the exact pattern helps distinguish local tissues from nerve involvement.
Is this urgent?
Seek emergency care for neck pain after a significant injury with weakness, numbness, loss of coordination, or difficulty walking. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever with severe stiffness, a severe unusual headache, unexplained weight change, or new bladder or bowel problems. Symptoms that are mild but persistent can be reviewed routinely.
Common causes
The causes are listed alphabetically, not as a likelihood ranking. Cervical Radiculopathy presents with neck pain that may radiate into an arm with tingling, numbness, or weakness. Cervical Spondylosis presents with age-related changes in the neck that may cause stiffness or nerve symptoms. Herniated Disc presents when disc material irritates nearby structures and can cause arm symptoms. Muscle Strain presents with local pain and tenderness after overuse or an awkward movement. Myofascial Pain Syndrome presents with painful tight muscle bands and referred discomfort. Text Neck presents with strain linked to prolonged head-forward device use. Whiplash presents after a sudden neck movement, often following a collision or fall.
How neck pain is assessed
A clinician asks about onset, injury, work and device habits, pain distribution, sleep, and changes in strength or sensation. Examination may include neck movement, shoulder function, reflexes, sensation, and walking. Imaging is not needed for every episode, but it may be considered when symptoms persist, follow an injury, or suggest nerve, disc, or bone involvement.
Treatment by cause
Many episodes improve with activity modification, gentle movement, heat or other symptom relief, and a gradual return to normal use. Physiotherapy can address mobility, strength, posture, and work habits. Workplace Ergonomic Assessment may identify screen, chair, or task changes. Depending on the cause, clinicians may consider Osteopathy, Chiropractic Adjustment, or Traction Therapy after checking suitability. Nerve symptoms, trauma, or progressive weakness need cause-specific medical guidance.
Reducing future neck pain
Change position regularly instead of holding the neck still for long periods. Bring screens closer to eye level, support the forearms during desk work, vary hand-held device use, and build neck, shoulder, and upper-back strength gradually. Use lifting technique that keeps loads close and avoid returning abruptly to activities that previously triggered pain.
Symptoms that may occur with neck pain
Stiffness, headache, shoulder pain, muscle spasm, arm pain, pins and needles, numbness, or weakness can occur. Loss of balance, clumsy hands, or symptoms in both arms or legs should prompt assessment because they may indicate more than local muscle tension.
When to arrange a review
Arrange a review when pain limits sleep, work, driving, or arm use; keeps returning; or does not steadily improve. A clinician can match rehabilitation to the source and decide whether further evaluation is needed.

Questions people ask
Can poor posture cause neck pain?
Sustained head-forward positions and limited movement can strain the neck and shoulders; varying posture and building supporting strength may help.
When should neck pain be checked?
Arrange assessment for persistent or function-limiting pain, and seek urgent care for injury with weakness, coordination changes, or severe neurological symptoms.
