What should you know about flat milia?

Milia develop when keratin becomes trapped just beneath the skin surface. They are often white, cream, or skin-coloured and commonly appear around the eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead. A subtle flat appearance can reflect their small size, surrounding skin texture, or a partially settled cyst. They are different from whiteheads, which form in a pore and may have an opening. A clinician can distinguish milia from other skin bumps when the appearance is uncertain.

Wash gently, avoid harsh scrubs, and do not squeeze or pierce spots near the eyes. Heavy products or irritation may make the area look more noticeable, so choose non-irritating skincare and introduce changes gradually. If milia persist or bother you, a dermatologist may discuss topical retinoids or a procedure such as curettage and cautery. Treatment around the eyelids needs particular care because the skin is thin and sensitive.

Arrange an assessment if a spot grows, becomes painful, bleeds, changes colour, or does not resemble typical milia. Seek review for many new bumps, marked redness, discharge, or swelling around the eye. A diagnosis is especially worthwhile when home care has not helped, because several conditions can look like small pale bumps.
