Feline asthma symptoms: what to know

A cat with asthma may cough repeatedly, wheeze, breathe faster, or stretch its neck while crouching close to the ground. Some cats seem tired after an episode or avoid activity. Open-mouth breathing is especially concerning. Symptoms may appear after exposure to smoke, sprays, dust, or litter particles. Allergies and airway inflammation can contribute, but chronic cough, infection, parasites, heart disease, and other lung conditions can look similar. A veterinarian may need an examination and tests to identify the cause.

Move the cat away from smoke, fragrances, aerosol products, and dusty litter. Keep the environment quiet and cool, handle the cat as little as possible, and contact a veterinarian for advice. Take a short video only if doing so does not delay care. Use prescribed medication exactly as directed; human medicines can be dangerous. Note the trigger, posture, breathing effort, appetite, and recovery so the clinician can assess the pattern.

Go to an emergency veterinarian immediately for open-mouth breathing, blue or grey gums, collapse, severe belly movement, marked distress, or breathing that does not settle. Transport the cat gently in a carrier and avoid forcing food, water, or medicine during a crisis. Prompt veterinary review is also appropriate for new wheezing, repeated coughs, poor appetite, or reduced movement, even when the cat appears comfortable between episodes.
