What should you know about a facial peel for milia?

Milia are firm, usually white or skin-coloured bumps that commonly appear around the eyes, cheeks or nose. They are not the same as whiteheads, although several facial bumps can look alike. A peel removes or loosens some surface cells; it may not release a cyst beneath intact skin. The peel strength, ingredients, skin tone, eye-area location and history of irritation affect the risk of burning or temporary colour change.

Have the bumps identified before booking a peel, particularly near the eyelids. Avoid picking, needles or home acids, which can injure skin and leave marks. A clinician may discuss gentle skin care, a prescribed topical retinoid or removal with curettage and cautery when appropriate. Tell the practitioner about eczema, recent tanning, cold sores, medicines and previous reactions, then follow the preparation and aftercare instructions.

Arrange an assessment if bumps are painful, red, rapidly changing, bleeding, spreading or affecting vision. After a peel, seek prompt advice for severe burning, blistering, increasing swelling, pus, fever or darkening or lightening that is worsening. Eye-area symptoms or chemical exposure to the eye need urgent medical attention.
