What should you know about extracting milia?

Milia are tiny, firm, white or skin-coloured cysts containing trapped keratin. They commonly appear around the eyes, cheeks, nose or forehead and are different from ordinary acne pustules. A bump that looks like a whitehead may instead be another type of skin lesion, so diagnosis matters before removal.

A clinician may use a sterile needle or blade to create a small opening, then lift out the contents. The method depends on the location, depth and number of bumps. Trying to pierce or squeeze milia yourself can cause bleeding, infection, scarring or lingering dark marks, especially on delicate skin around the eyes.
