Environmental asthma: triggers and action

A trigger can irritate sensitive airways, causing them to narrow and produce extra mucus. This may lead to wheezing, cough, chest tightness, or breathlessness. Symptoms can begin during exposure or later, and different people have different triggers. Keeping a record of location, activity, weather, cleaning products, and symptoms can reveal patterns. Allergic rhinitis and house dust mite allergy may occur alongside asthma, but breathing symptoms still need their own assessment.

Use your prescribed preventer as directed and keep your reliever available. Reduce exposure by ventilating around fumes, avoiding smoke, controlling indoor dust, and following the written asthma action plan. Do not make major changes to medicines because of a single good or bad day. A clinician can review inhaler technique, examine recurring symptoms, and decide whether testing or a different treatment approach is needed.

Get urgent help if breathing is difficult at rest, speaking is hard, lips look blue or grey, drowsiness develops, or the reliever is not helping as instructed. Seek prompt review for repeated night waking, frequent reliever use, or symptoms that are becoming harder to control. Nebuliser treatment may be used in acute care, but it does not replace an individual action plan.

Ask how to recognise your personal triggers, when to use each inhaler, and how to check technique. Ask what to do during travel, dust exposure, or poor air quality, and whether nasal symptoms need separate treatment.
