Developing asthma as an adult: what to know

Asthma involves sensitive airways that become inflamed and narrow in response to triggers. Symptoms may appear after years without breathing problems and can vary from day to day. Exercise, respiratory infections, workplace dust or chemicals, smoke, cold air, and allergies may aggravate them. Allergic rhinitis and house dust mite allergy can coexist with asthma, but breathing symptoms can also occur without an obvious allergy. A clinician may assess your symptom pattern, listen to your chest, and arrange breathing tests. Wheezing, cough, and chest tightness are presentations of asthma, but each can have other causes.

Arrange an appointment if recurring cough, wheezing, or tight breathing is affecting sleep, activity, or work. Keep a brief record of when symptoms happen, possible triggers, night waking, and any medicines used. Reduce exposure to smoke and known irritants, and follow an agreed inhaler plan if asthma is diagnosed. Inhaler technique matters because poor delivery can leave medicine in the mouth rather than the airways. Ask whether you need a reliever, a preventer, or an action plan for flare-ups. A nebuliser treatment may be used in urgent settings when inhaled medicine needs to be delivered with clinical support.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, difficulty speaking in full sentences, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or a reliever that is not easing symptoms as directed. Do not drive yourself if breathing is dangerously difficult. New chest tightness with sweating, collapse, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw also needs emergency assessment because it may not be asthma.
