How long does dengue fever last?

Dengue fever often develops after several days without symptoms and may improve over about a week, while tiredness can last longer. The illness commonly begins with fever and may include headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, nausea, or a rash. People recover at different speeds, and some need monitoring after the fever drops.

An early febrile phase is followed by a transition around the time the temperature settles. During that transition, fluid leakage or bleeding can develop in some people, even if fever is easing. A later recovery phase brings gradual improvement, but weakness and reduced appetite may remain. The pattern is not identical for every person.

Rest, take regular small drinks, and keep a record of symptoms and temperature. Use only fever medicines recommended by a clinician, and avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless specifically cleared. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are significant, worsening, or follow a recent stay in a dengue-risk area. Reduce mosquito bites while feverish.

Urgent assessment is needed for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, faintness, breathing difficulty, unusual drowsiness, confusion, or inability to drink. Seek care promptly if you become worse as the fever falls, rather than waiting for the expected recovery day.
