How many days does dengue fever last?

Symptoms may begin after an interval following an infected mosquito bite. Fever can appear with headache, chills, muscle aches and joint pain. Some people develop nausea, a rash or easy bruising. The fever may settle while the person still feels weak, so an apparent improvement does not always mean the illness has fully passed.

The course varies between people and can be affected by a previous dengue infection, age and other health conditions. Counting days alone cannot identify dengue or predict its severity. A clinician may use the symptom history, examination and blood tests to guide follow-up.

Write down when fever began, how often you vomit, how much you are drinking and any bleeding or new rash. Rest and take frequent fluids if you can keep them down. Use only medicines recommended by a clinician or pharmacist, because some pain medicines can increase bleeding risk when dengue is possible. Arrange a GP Consultation if fever continues, symptoms intensify or you have relevant travel or mosquito exposure.

Get urgent help for severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stools, confusion, unusual sleepiness, breathing problems, fainting, cold or clammy skin, or very little urine. Seek prompt advice if you cannot drink, become increasingly weak or develop easy bruising. These signs matter even if the fever has started to fall.

Ask your doctor which day of illness you may be on, whether repeat assessment is needed, what fluids and pain relief are appropriate, and what changes should trigger immediate review.
