Easy Bruising: Causes, Assessment and Care

Easy bruising means marks appear after minor pressure or injury, and persistent or unexplained changes deserve medical assessment.

A bruise may begin red, purple or blue, then fade through green or yellow as blood beneath the skin is broken down. It can be tender when pressed, although some marks do not hurt. Notice whether bruises are larger than expected, occur in clusters, appear on the trunk or face, or arise without a clear knock.

Seek urgent medical help for bruising with uncontrolled bleeding, blood in vomit, urine or stool, a severe headache after a head injury, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, or a widespread pinpoint rash with fever. Arrange a prompt clinical review if new bruising is frequent, rapidly increasing, accompanied by nosebleeds or gum bleeding, or follows a new medicine.

Minor injury, fragile skin and medicines that affect clotting can contribute to bruising. Alcohol-related liver problems, nutritional difficulties, infections and conditions affecting blood cells or platelets can also be considered. The causes listed here are alphabetical, not a ranking of likelihood.

Dengue fever can involve easy bruising alongside fever and feeling unwell. Anaemia, aplastic anaemia, leukaemia, acute myeloid leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes may affect blood-cell production; clinicians interpret bruising alongside the rest of the history, examination and tests.

A clinician will ask when the bruising began, whether injuries explain it, and whether there is bleeding elsewhere, tiredness, fever, weight change or infection symptoms. They may examine the skin, mouth, abdomen and lymph nodes, and review prescribed medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements.

Blood tests may check blood-cell levels, platelets, clotting and organ function. Further testing depends on the pattern found; this avoids treating a visible mark while missing the reason it developed.

Care focuses on the identified driver. This can include adjusting a medicine only with the prescriber's guidance, treating an infection, supporting nutrition, or arranging specialist care for a blood or bone-marrow condition. Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medicine because of bruising without medical advice, as it may have an important protective purpose.

Use good lighting and clear walkways to reduce knocks, wear protective equipment for activities with impact, and tell each clinician about all medicines and supplements. Keep a dated record or photograph of new marks if the pattern is changing. Regular meals and adequate fluids support general health, but they do not replace assessment of unexplained bruising.

Report bleeding from the gums or nose, very heavy menstrual bleeding, tiny red-purple spots, persistent fever, night sweats, unusual tiredness, abdominal swelling, or recurrent infections. These details help determine how quickly assessment is needed.

A single bruise after a clear injury often settles as the body heals. Repeated unexplained bruises can warrant follow-up so that a medicine effect, bleeding tendency, infection or blood-cell problem is recognised and managed appropriately.
