What should you know about deep milia?

Milia form when keratin, a protein found in the outer skin, becomes enclosed in a tiny cyst. A deep bump around the eyelid, cheek, or another area can resemble a whitehead or another type of skin bump, so appearance alone is not always enough for diagnosis. A clinician may inspect the lesion closely and consider its texture, location, and whether it is solitary or clustered.

Do not pierce, pick, or press the bump. Use a gentle cleanser and non-irritating moisturiser, and mention any new heavy product that preceded the bumps. If treatment is wanted, a dermatologist may discuss a topical retinoid or a controlled procedure such as curettage and cautery. Treatment around the eyes needs particular care, and the choice depends on depth and location.

Arrange an assessment if the bump changes, becomes painful, bleeds, affects vision, or does not behave like a stable tiny cyst. Prompt care is sensible for marked redness, swelling, discharge, or several rapidly appearing lesions. A diagnosis is especially useful when a bump is near the eye or keeps returning after attempted removal.
