Cyst on the Scalp Growing: What to Know

A pilar cyst is a sac linked with a hair follicle. It may be smooth, rounded, and firm, and it can move slightly over the deeper tissues. Some enlarge without pain; irritation can add tenderness, redness, or swelling. Those features can occur with inflammation, but they do not confirm the diagnosis. Other scalp lumps can look similar, so a hands-on assessment is the clearest next step.

Do not squeeze or puncture the bump, even if it seems close to the surface. Avoid scratching it and use care when combing around it.
