Clindamycin for a sebaceous cyst: what to know

A so-called sebaceous cyst is often an epidermoid cyst: a sac under the skin filled with keratin. It may be a quiet, rounded lump for a long time. If the wall ruptures or the area becomes inflamed, it can become tender, red, swollen, and warm. Inflammation does not always mean bacteria are present, so a clinician examines the lump before choosing an antibiotic.

Clindamycin can target certain bacteria but cannot dissolve the sac. A steroid injection into the skin may sometimes calm inflammation, while abscess drainage may be needed if pus is trapped. Cyst removal is the option that addresses the sac and may reduce repeated flare-ups, although the timing depends on the skin's condition.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press the lump. Keep the skin clean, avoid friction from tight clothing or straps, and use only medicines recommended for that lesion. If clindamycin is prescribed, follow the label and tell the prescriber about antibiotic reactions or previous severe diarrhoea.

Photographs can help you notice change, but they do not confirm the diagnosis. Arrange assessment for a new, growing, painful, or recurrent lump. A clinician may discuss observation, an injection, drainage, or removal after checking whether the lump is a cyst, abscess, or another type of skin lump.

Seek prompt review if the lump becomes rapidly larger, very painful, hot, increasingly red, or starts draining. Get urgent help for fever, red streaks, facial swelling, or feeling seriously unwell. Contact the prescriber for severe diarrhoea, hives, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty while taking clindamycin.

Ask whether the lump is inflamed or infected, whether it contains a drainable collection, and whether removal should wait until inflammation settles. Ask how to care for the site, what recurrence might look like, and whether your other medicines affect the antibiotic choice.
