What this means
Croup is usually a viral illness that causes swelling around the voice box and upper airway. It can produce a barking cough, a hoarse voice, and a harsh or squeaky sound when breathing in. A vapour rub may make a child feel that their nose is clearer, but it does not reduce the airway swelling that causes croup. Strong scents can also irritate some children. Keep products away from the mouth, nostrils, eyes, and broken skin, and follow the product label for age restrictions.
A cough or fever can accompany the viral infection, but these symptoms alone do not show how severe the airway swelling is. Observe the child's breathing and ability to drink as well as the sound of the cough.
What you can do
Keep the child upright and as settled as possible, because crying may make noisy breathing worse. Offer small, frequent drinks if swallowing is comfortable. Use only medicines recommended for that child and do not give a cough remedy or scented product as a substitute for an assessment. A clinician may prescribe treatment that reduces airway inflammation; a nebuliser treatment is used in selected urgent situations, not as a home replacement for medical advice.
Arrange a child health consultation if the barking cough is persistent, symptoms are worsening, or you are unsure whether the noisy breathing is croup.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help if the child is struggling to breathe, the skin between the ribs or at the neck pulls in, the lips look blue or grey, the child cannot swallow fluids, drools, becomes unusually sleepy, or makes a harsh breathing noise while resting. Do not delay for a vapour rub to work. If breathing is noisy only during crying, contact a clinician promptly for advice, particularly when symptoms are getting worse.
