What the sound can mean

Swelling around the voice box and windpipe narrows the passage for air. A child may have a hoarse voice, runny nose, mild fever, or a barking cough before the noisy breathing appears. Stridor while resting is more concerning than a sound heard only during crying. Other breathing illnesses, including bronchiolitis or asthma, can sound different and need assessment.

What to do now

Hold your child upright and use a calm voice; crying can make the airway noise worse. Offer small, frequent drinks if swallowing is comfortable. Avoid forcing food, putting anything in the throat, or using steam, which can cause burns. A clinician may prescribe medicine to reduce airway swelling, depending on the examination.

When to seek care

Call emergency services if your child is struggling to breathe, the skin between the ribs is pulling in, the lips look blue or grey, or the child is unusually sleepy, floppy, or unable to swallow. Seek urgent medical advice for stridor at rest, worsening symptoms, drooling, or difficulty drinking. Stay with the child and keep them upright while help is arranged.

Is stridor the same as wheezing?

No. Stridor usually comes from the upper airway and is louder when breathing in; wheezing usually comes from narrower lower airways and is often heard when breathing out.

Can croup return after it improves?

Symptoms can fluctuate, especially overnight. Arrange medical advice if noisy breathing returns, becomes stronger, or occurs while the child is calm.
