What should you know about croup barking cough sound?

Parents often describe croup as sounding like a seal’s bark. The cough may be rough, hollow, and more noticeable at night or when a child cries. Hoarseness can accompany it. A high-pitched noise when breathing in, called stridor, suggests narrowing higher in the airway and matters more than the cough’s exact tone. A wet cough, wheeze from the chest, vomiting after coughing, or a cough lasting beyond the acute illness may suggest another explanation such as a common cold, reflux, asthma, bronchitis, or another airway condition. A recording can help a clinician if the sound has stopped by the appointment.

Hold the child upright, speak calmly, and reduce activity while the cough is intense. Offer drinks in small amounts if swallowing is comfortable. Keep the room free from smoke and strong fragrances. Avoid steam inhalation and avoid pressing the tongue down to inspect the throat. Do not give antibiotics or over-the-counter cough products unless prescribed or specifically recommended. A clinician can assess severity and decide whether medication is appropriate.

Call emergency services for stridor while the child is resting, visible pulling in at the ribs or neck, pauses in breathing, inability to drink, drooling with difficulty swallowing, unusual drowsiness, or blue or grey colour around the lips. Seek same-day medical advice if the barking cough is worsening, keeps returning overnight, or is accompanied by fever, chest pain, or reduced fluid intake. A sudden cough after choking also needs urgent assessment.
