Cornual Ectopic Pregnancy: Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

The term cornual often describes implantation at the upper side of the uterus, close to the point where a fallopian tube travels through the muscular uterine wall. It is a type of ectopic pregnancy because the pregnancy is not developing in the usual central uterine cavity.

Early symptoms can resemble other pregnancies or may include one-sided pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, or discomfort that comes and goes. Symptoms alone cannot show where a pregnancy is located. A pelvic condition such as pelvic inflammatory disease may affect the tubes and is one detail clinicians may consider, but it does not establish the diagnosis.

Because the pregnancy can grow within a muscular corner of the uterus, stretching and rupture may cause internal bleeding. The risk is related to the pregnancy's location and course, not simply to how intense symptoms feel at one moment.

Assessment usually combines pregnancy hormone blood tests with a transvaginal ultrasound. Clinicians look at the pregnancy's position, the uterine cavity, the tube area, and signs of bleeding. A scan may need to be repeated when the location is not clear early on.

Treatment depends on scan findings, hormone results, bleeding, and your medical stability. Options can include medicine that stops pregnancy tissue from continuing to grow, surgery to remove the ectopic pregnancy, or emergency surgery when rupture or major bleeding is suspected. A salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube and is only one possible operation; the recommended procedure depends on the anatomy and circumstances.

Do not self-treat pain or delay review because symptoms are mild. Arrange prompt assessment if you have a positive pregnancy test with pelvic pain or bleeding, especially if you have had an ectopic pregnancy before.

Go to emergency care immediately for sudden severe pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, severe dizziness, unusual weakness, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These may indicate internal bleeding, which can become life-threatening without rapid treatment.

If you have ongoing pain, light bleeding, or feel unwell after treatment, contact the treating team promptly. Keep follow-up appointments even if bleeding has stopped, because examination and hormone monitoring help confirm that treatment is complete.
