Maexeni combined pill: patient guide

The pill's oestrogen and progestogen act together to prevent pregnancy. It can also alter bleeding and period pain, but it is not suitable for everyone and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Use the printed active ingredients and strength to identify what you have received rather than relying only on tablet colour or packaging. Keep the patient leaflet available because it explains the tablet sequence, planned breaks and product-specific missed-dose response.

The hormonal combination prevents ovulation, makes cervical mucus more difficult for sperm to cross and changes the womb lining. Bleeding on break days is triggered by hormone withdrawal and may become lighter, irregular or absent while using the pill.

Take tablets in blister order and start each new pack when directed. If a dose is late or missed, do not improvise a schedule: check the leaflet or contact a pharmacist with the pack in hand. Vomiting after a tablet and ongoing severe diarrhoea can also reduce absorption.

Make sure the prescriber knows about migraine with aura, blood pressure problems, blood clots, smoking, liver conditions, breast cancer history, upcoming surgery or limited mobility. Also report prescribed medicines, supplements and herbal remedies, since some combinations can change contraceptive protection or medicine levels.

Obtain emergency help for sudden shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, coughing blood, a swollen painful leg, sudden weakness or numbness, speech difficulty, sudden eyesight loss, collapse or an intense headache unlike your usual headaches. Tell emergency staff which contraceptive you take.

Contact your clinician without delay for a first migraine with aura, yellowing of the skin or eyes, a new breast lump, severe mood change, suspected pregnancy or very heavy bleeding. Less urgent but persistent nausea, breast tenderness, headaches or spotting also deserve review if they affect daily life.

Ask what the active hormones are, how and when to start, whether backup contraception is needed, which missed-pill rule applies, how your health history changes risk, and when blood pressure or treatment should be reviewed.
